Finding beauty in the ephemeral by Jason Peters

In his installation pieces using ENTTEC lighting solutions, Jason transforms discarded objects, such as buckets, into stunning works of art. Inspired by Duchamp and Flavin, he encourages the public to question consumer culture and environmental degradation.

Jason Peter’s artistic vision was shaped by his childhood in Munich, a city rich in culture, history, and surrounded by the stunning Alps. This environment, with its shifting landscapes and ever-changing light, instilled in him a deep appreciation for how light and space influence our perception of the world.

From a young age, he was fascinated by the way natural light filled a room. It seemed so simple, yet so powerful.

But what if artificial light could change the experience of a space?

Jason couldn’t help but wonder how light could transform the experience of a space. This curiosity sparked his creative exploration and led to a pivotal moment in his career—an important commission for the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh.

In Pittsburgh, everything began to shift. Jason simplified his approach, stripping away the excess to focus on the core idea: how could light alter and reveal the space around a sculpture?

What if light didn’t just highlight a piece of art but completely redefined the environment it existed in?

This question became the foundation of his work, sparking a new direction for his art.

Jason started using unconventional materials like recycled buckets, pieces of the world around him, to create sculptures that didn’t just occupy space but interacted with it. The sculptures weren’t passive—they were active participants in the environment, reshaping both the art and the space it inhabited.

Through his work, Jason invites us to see light in a new way. Each piece uncovers hidden structures and challenges us to look at art and space differently. With each sculpture, Jason invites viewers to experience the world in a different light (quite literally).

Lit up with LED pixel strips

Jason chose ENTTEC for its all-in-one lighting and hardware solutions, which included licensed ELM software for easy and seamless LED mapping.

As a newcomer to this type of lighting, he found having a single point of contact for both technical support and software issues incredibly helpful, eliminating the hassle of dealing with multiple companies.

ENTTEC’s high-quality, durable products provided the reliability Jason needed, and the ENTTEC Pixelator system stood out as a game-changer. It enhanced the system’s functionality and made managing LED performance much smoother.

The versatility of the S-PLAY SP-1 has been another highlight, especially with its preset functions for timing and power management. Jason is diving into remote access and experimenting with trigger functions, and even though he’s not a computer expert, he finds the software intuitive and easy to use as he gets more comfortable with it.

Looking ahead, Jason is excited to collaborate with experts to refine his ideas. He envisions adding music and linking stages to trigger functions to create a truly interactive experience that will take the sculptures to the next level and captivate the audience.

“I’ve been using ENTTEC products for about two and a half years now, and they’ve helped me overcome many challenges,” Jason says.
